ABGLANZ DER HERRLICHKEIT
(THE REFLECTION OF GLORY)
Cistercian texts and glass paintings from the West Window of Altenberg Cathedral.

The title of this booklet relates to St. Bernhard of Clairvaux, the great Cistercian. In his essay, ‘About the Conversion’ (chapter 2), with reference to the Book of Hebrew Chapter 1/3, he referred to the ‘Son of God’ and ‘the Word of the Father’ as ‘The Reflection of Glory’, being similar to ‘a beam of light’ as well as ‘the inner voice’ of a human being.

In continuation of the theme of the 1996/97 Christmas Exhibition, ‘In Search of the Light of the World’ initiated and published by Glasmalerei Peters GmbH, this book reflects on the ideas of Christianity in word and picture and encourages the pursuit of the senses and aesthetic delight.
The 33 coloured reproductions display smaller and larger extracts of glass paintings from the West Window of the former Cistercian Church at Altenberg near Cologne. The paintings were restored in the Peters’ workshops between 1994 and 2006.

FARBFENSTER UND SCHUTZVERGLASUNGEN(COLOURED WINDOWS AND PROTECTIVE GLAZING)
Survey of the Church of St. John the Baptist on Langenstrasse

For decades, representatives of the preservation of monuments and protected buildings, architects, restorers and glass painters have had to deal with the advancing damage to historic glass paintings. The problems related to the restoration of coloured stained glass are often extremely diverse; each window requires intensive care and consideration in relation to the specific causes of damage. Research and extensive examination of the conservation methods are just as important for the success of this work as is careful planning of restoration concepts and appropriate documentation.

The efforts made in 1990/91 in conjunction with the restoration of the stained glass of the Catholic Church, St. John the Baptist, on Langenstrasse, which originates from the time of the churches’ construction in 1891/92, gave the initiative for empirical research into the effects of different types of protective glazing.

PHOTOVOLTAIK IN VERBINDUNG MIT GLASGESTALTUNG
(PHOTVOLTAIC IN CONJUNCTION WITH GLASS DESIGN)

In the history of glass painting, new developments and changing demands and requirements have always opened up new avenues. The process of using lead rails to connect small glass mosaics and small pieces of glass to achieve larger glass panels commenced almost 2,000 years ago. Prior to this, the pieces were placed in a bed of mortar.

Approximately 50 years ago, another step in the development of the technique of glass mosaics began by placing pieces of glass into concrete. Now there is another development; photovoltaic cells may also be applied onto and connected with glass. Using a particular procedure, the cells can be positioned freely onto the glass surface. If required, they may be reduced or arranged in random order.

The technique of leading and of thick glass in concrete has been adopted readily by contemporary artists and has been used and processed intensively as a medium for artistic expression.

With the process of photovoltaics, we see a chance to provide the artist with a suitable medium to meet the demands and possibilities of our time. Similar to the process of leading or concrete drafting, this method can be utilised artistically, in order to achieve independent forms of expression and very individual concepts of form and effect.

The intention of this book was to summarise the thoughts and concepts of all parties involved in this project. The idea was born on 11 October 2002, on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the first photovoltaic window produced using this technique in our workshops at Hilligenbusch.

KUNST ZWISCHEN FUNKTION UND AUTONOMIE(ART BETWEEN FUNCTION AND AUTONOMY)
Elements of the determination of a location
Artists’ convention on the ‘Hegge’

‘DIE HEGGE’, The Christian Institution of Education, was founded in 1945 by the women of the Benedictine Association of the Hegge. For more than 50 years, artists have been and continue to be invited to hold their conventions here – in addition to the other educational work that takes place here.

The subject of the 2006 Artists’ Convention marks a classic dilemma: ART BETWEEN FUNCTION AND AUTONOMY has always been an issue. With their work, artists have always taken a very individual stand between these two poles, between providing a service and maintaining independence, between the constraints of the location, the subject matter and the client’s requirements on the one hand and the desire to put forward their own representation on the other hand.

What are the boundaries and constraints that artists must deal with? Which restrictions are destructive and lead to mediocre artistic results? Can constraints also provide opportunity to provoke extremely good works?

The presentations and lectures at this convention are based around these questions, but taken from different perspectives and reproduced in this edition by Johannes Schreiter, Holger Brülls, Beatrice Lavarini, Josef Meyer zu Schlochtern and Walter Schrader.
