None of the processes of restoration is as difficult to assess as the cleaning stage. How far can one go, how far does one have to go? The type and the extent of the soiling vary considerably. Coatings of dust, soot, filler lime- scale, gloss paint, coatings from earlier restorations, animal faeces, micro organisms and corrosion are found on the various sections. The delicateness of the coat of paint underneath will determine the extent of the cleaning that may be done. To retain a maximum of the historic stock, cleaning should be conducted with extreme care and under constant microscopic examination. If necessary, temporary intermediate safety measures should be applied in the process.
