The art of retouching is divided into two categories. Firstly, the retouching of a crack or a conchoidal fracture, which is carried out specifically with acrylic or oil paints along the glued edge; secondly, retouching in order to enhance the impression of the picture. The impression of the window is often impaired through the loss of individual components, for instance, if coats of paint have lifted off. Retouching provides the possibility of recreating the original image. The procedures vary considerably, from working with semi-permanent paints on the blank reverse side of the original, right through to doubling with expressions being burnt into the surface. The intensity of the process can vary significantly, ranging from slightly shaded support through to a full reconstruction that has been adapted to the original.

Before, during and after retouching.

The importance of every retouch is that it does not have a disturbing effect, but is still distinguishable from the original. To achieve a perfect retouch, it is essential that the client and the representative of the preservation of historic monuments and buildings provide defined instructions in respect to their preferred solution.
